A healthy weight is a range, not a number. For any given height it spans roughly 15–20 kg, and where you sit inside it depends on things a scale cannot see: muscle mass, frame size, and where your body stores fat. Weight is the easiest thing to measure and among the least informative on its own.

The span column is the part worth noticing. At 175 cm the healthy range is nearly 20 kg wide. Any tool that answers “what should I weigh?” with one precise figure is discarding that width, and the width is the honest part of the answer.

Why shape matters more than weight
Two people can share a height, a weight and therefore a BMI, and carry entirely different health profiles. What separates them is usually where the fat sits. Fat stored around the abdomen and around the organs behaves differently from fat stored subcutaneously on the hips and thighs, and it is more strongly associated with metabolic risk.
This is the gap that shape measures fill, and none of them needs equipment beyond a tape measure:

Thresholds vary by population and are screening prompts rather than diagnoses. Waist-to-height ratio has the practical edge for self-assessment: one measurement, one division, no chart, and the same 0.5 threshold across most adult heights.
“Ideal weight” formulas and their limits
Four formulas — Devine, Robinson, Miller and Hamwi — are still widely quoted as ideal body weight. All four were developed between 1964 and 1983, and most were built for calculating medication doses rather than for setting health targets. They use only height and sex, and they disagree with one another by several kilograms at the same height.

- How much should I weigh for my height?
- There is no single correct weight for a height. The healthy range corresponds to a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9, which for most heights spans 15 to 20 kilograms. Where you sit within that range depends on muscle mass, frame size and body fat distribution, none of which weight alone can show.
- Is waist measurement better than weight?
- For assessing health risk, waist measurement adds information that weight and BMI cannot. Fat stored around the abdomen is more strongly associated with metabolic risk than fat stored on the hips and thighs, and two people at the same weight and height can have very different waist measurements.
- What is a healthy waist-to-height ratio?
- A commonly cited threshold is 0.5 — keeping your waist measurement below half your height. It is easy to apply, requires no chart, and works across most adult heights, which is why some guidelines now favour it as a first-line screening measure.
- Does a healthy weight mean the same thing at every age?
- No. Standard adult thresholds fit middle-aged adults best. In older adults, being at the lower end of the healthy range carries risks of its own, including reduced muscle mass and lower reserves during illness, and some evidence supports slightly higher targets after 65.
