Body Fat and Body Composition
Body composition describes what your weight is made of — fat, muscle, bone and water — rather than how much of it there is. It is the information BMI is structurally unable to provide, and it is why two people at the same height and weight can sit in completely different places health-wise.

The error column deserves more attention than it usually gets. A tape method reporting “18.4%” is really saying “somewhere around 15 to 22”. That is still useful — it is a different category of information from BMI — but the decimal place is decoration.
This has a practical consequence: pick one method and stay with it. A consistent method with a known bias tracks change accurately even when its absolute number is off. Switching between a smart scale and a tape measure produces jumps that look like real changes and are not.
Where BMI runs out
BMI divides weight by height squared. It has no way to know whether a kilogram is muscle or fat, so a heavily trained person and a sedentary one can land on the same number with entirely different bodies. The two failure directions matter differently:
- Muscular people read as overweight. Visible, widely known, and mostly harmless — the person can see the classification is wrong.
- People with low muscle and high fat read as healthy. Invisible, and the more consequential error, because nothing prompts a second look.
The second case is why body composition is worth measuring even when BMI looks fine. A normal BMI with high body fat is a real pattern, and weight alone will never surface it.

Tape-based methods land within roughly 3 to 4 points, and bioelectrical impedance scales vary more because their readings shift with hydration.
- Why does my body fat reading change day to day?
- If you are using a smart scale, most of that movement is hydration rather than fat. Bioelectrical impedance infers composition from electrical resistance, which changes with how much you have drunk, eaten and exercised, and even with skin temperature. Tape measurements are far more stable across days.
- Should I track body fat or weight?
- Weight is easier to measure and much noisier in meaning. Body composition answers the more useful question, especially during strength training, when muscle gain and fat loss can leave weight unchanged for weeks while the body changes substantially. Tracking the trend in either matters more than any single reading.
