BMI and Muscle Mass

BMI cannot account for muscle mass because it never measures tissue type at all — it only divides total weight by height squared. A kilogram of muscle and a kilogram of fat contribute identically to the number.

Worked example

A well-muscled adult at 178 cm and 92 kg has a BMI of 29, classified as Overweight — despite potentially having a low body fat percentage and a physique most people would describe as lean and athletic.

Why muscle mass changes the outcome

Muscle tissue is denser than fat tissue — roughly 15-20% more mass in the same volume. Two people who look similarly sized can weigh noticeably different amounts if one carries significantly more muscle. Since BMI only sees total weight, it cannot tell the difference between "heavier because of more fat" and "heavier because of more muscle."
