BMI vs Body Fat Percentage
BMI and body fat percentage answer different questions. BMI classifies weight relative to height; body fat percentage estimates what that weight is made of. Confusing the two is the single most common misunderstanding about BMI.

Both estimates come from the Deurenberg equation, a population-level formula derived from BMI, age and sex — not a direct measurement. Treat the percentage figures as ballpark estimates, not precise readings.

When they disagree
The clearest disagreement is a muscular person with a high BMI and low body fat — BMI reads "overweight," body composition reads "athletic." The quieter and more consequential disagreement runs the other way: a person with a normal BMI but a high body fat percentage, sometimes called normal-weight obesity, where BMI alone would miss a pattern worth knowing about.
Neither number is "wrong" in these cases — they are answering different questions, and the mismatch itself is useful information.

- Is body fat percentage more accurate than BMI?
- They measure different things, so "more accurate" depends on the question. BMI is a simple, fast weight-category screen. Body fat percentage estimates body composition, which BMI cannot see at all. Neither is a complete picture on its own.
- Can two people have the same BMI but different body fat?
- Yes, routinely. BMI cannot distinguish muscle from fat, so a muscular person and a sedentary person of the same height and weight land on an identical BMI despite very different body compositions.
- Should I track BMI or body fat percentage?
- BMI is useful as a quick, free, population-level screen. Body fat percentage is more informative for tracking body composition changes, especially during strength training. Many people benefit from knowing both rather than treating either as the whole story.
- Why does body fat percentage estimation need age and sex, if BMI does not?
- BMI itself has no sex or age term — it is purely weight over height squared. But converting a BMI into an estimated body fat percentage is a separate interpretation step, and at the same BMI, women and older adults on average carry a higher body fat percentage than men and younger adults. That is why the estimate (not BMI itself) needs those inputs.
