Common questions

Why does BMI vary so much by sport?
Different sports build different ratios of muscle to fat for a given body size, and BMI cannot distinguish between the two. A sport that builds a lot of muscle relative to height pushes BMI up; a sport that favors a lean, low-fat frame tends to keep BMI lower — neither reflects fitness level directly.
Which athletes are most likely to be misclassified by BMI?
Strength and power athletes — powerlifters, bodybuilders, football linemen — see the largest gap between BMI category and actual health, since their training builds the most muscle mass relative to height.
Can BMI ever accurately reflect a sport-specific body type?
For sports with a build close to the general population's average muscle-to-fat ratio, BMI tends to land closer to what a body composition measure would show. The mismatch grows as a sport's typical build moves further from that average in either direction.
What should athletes in any sport use alongside BMI?
A body fat percentage estimate gives a more sport-relevant picture than BMI alone, regardless of which sport. FFMI is particularly useful for strength and power athletes specifically, since it is built to describe muscularity directly.
