BMI for Athletes
Athletes are the clearest case where BMI breaks down. Muscle weighs more than fat at the same volume, so a well-trained body routinely lands in "overweight" territory on a formula that cannot tell the difference between the two.
Why this happens
BMI divides total weight by height squared. It has no mechanism for reading tissue type, so a kilogram of muscle and a kilogram of fat register identically. Strength athletes carry substantially more muscle mass than the general population at the same height, which pushes their BMI upward for reasons that have nothing to do with excess fat.
Where the gap shows up most
Powerlifters, bodybuilders, and rugby forwards see the widest gap between BMI category and actual body composition, since their training builds the most muscle relative to height. Distance runners and swimmers sit at the opposite end — lean frames with low body fat often land near the bottom of the standard BMI range, sometimes flagged as underweight despite excellent conditioning.

Two tools address BMI's blind spot directly:
- Body fat percentage — measures composition directly rather than inferring it from weight alone.
- FFMI (Fat-Free Mass Index) — built specifically to describe muscularity relative to height, the exact dimension BMI cannot see.

- Why is BMI unreliable for athletes?
- BMI cannot distinguish muscle from fat, and muscle is denser than fat. A strength athlete or bodybuilder can weigh considerably more than a sedentary person at the same height, purely from muscle, and BMI reads all of that extra weight the same way regardless of source.

- Strength sports — powerlifting, bodybuilding, rugby, American football linemen — tend to see the largest gap, since muscle mass is highest relative to height. Endurance athletes, by contrast, often land closer to or below standard BMI ranges due to low body fat and lighter frames.
